10 Skills Every Man Should Have

I know I said I’ll be back next year. But since I had a long weekend due to the Monday being a holiday, here again is my new post. hehe

I just got it via email from a friend. Hope you guys like it. =)

-The definition of being a man has changed drastically over the centuries. From he who can kill the buffalo, to he who can afford the most slaves, to he who can afford the tickets on the 50-yard line. The following ten points are the most important skills a man can have to survive in modern society.

10. Attention to Detail

Attention to detail and knowledge of the game are vital in the ability to properly score a game. Knowing that a runner touching home scores a run is not enough. A man should be able to document in only a few letters, numbers, and symbols everything that he sees happen from the first pitch to the final out. You should also be able to explain why “BB” means walk.

9. Build a Fire

822-Roaring-Fire

This seemingly basic skill is often overlooked by those who never joined the Boy Scouts. The skill was fine-tuned centuries ago, but one can never be sure when he will have to provide a fire for warmth, to cook, or for sheer pleasure. Start with small dry twigs in the shape of a teepee, and slowly build up to larger pieces of wood. Don’t smother it, but don’t let too much air in.

8. Tie a Tie

Picture 1-114

Imagine waking up the day of an important meeting or interview, showering, getting dressed, and then not being able to tie the tie. The open collar look might work for some of us, but for most it will simply look sloppy. There are plenty of videos on youtube to help you out. Personally I use a little cheat-sheet given to my grandfather by a department store in the ’50s. Some things just don’t change with time. Looking good is one of them. I recommend learning the “four in hand” method as it is the simplest – the adventurous might want to try a full windsor. Be sure to have a dimple in the tie (as is visible in the picture above).

7. Hold Their Own in Any Sport

Picture 2-76

Whether in the pool hall or a volleyball game at the company picnic, no one wants to lose. More importantly, no one wants to look like an idiot. As they say, you can’t win them all, but you can keep yourself from being embarrassed. A man should know the basic skills of every major sport, football, basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey, and various forms of non athletic games such as poker, pool, and fishing. Also, one should be able to explain the rules and basic skills of any of these competitions to any woman who asks.

6. Car Maintenance

Fixing Car2.Jpg

Every man has been in this situation: On a date with a cute girl, when suddenly the car stops working. She looks at you with those wide eyes, assuming you know how to fix it. Surprise ladies, we are not all mechanics. However, a man should be able to change a tire, jump start a car, recognize any fluids in the car, and be able to get the car to someone who can fix it, while not showing weakness in front of his lady.

Just paying the bills…

5. Wingman

How-To-Be-A-Good-Wingman

As a man, you have certain responsibilities to your friends. Possibly the most important one is to help him get laid. It may involve starting the conversation, or even distracting the less desirable friend. You should be able to accept anything short of long-term physical injury in order to help a buddy out. These acts should be rewarded for their bravery and must be re-paid.

4. Converse

Conversation1

A good conversation is almost an art form. The ability to be interesting and charismatic without dominating a conversation is a skill reserved for the real men amongst us. A man should have a good joke on hand, as well as a supported opinion of most current events, from the threat of Iran as a nuclear power to the Pacers’ need for a starting center.

4. Basic first aid

CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, dressing cuts, scrapes, burns, and bruises, are all invaluable skills that could benefit you to know. It could mean the difference between life and death, or simply make you more comfortable. The possible importance of these skills can not be understated. Knowing these skills will also keep you from panicking if the situation should arise. It will keep everyone safer and can save lives.

2. Fix things

Story-2

As Clint Eastwood said in Gran Torino, “WD-40, a vice grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone”. Most household problems, from squeaky doors to dripping faucets, can be fixed easily by anyone with a clue. Fixing things by yourself will save you money and be more satisfying than calling in a professional.

1. Cook

Gcsyoung Man Cooking

Long gone are the days of hunting and gathering, where any food was considered good food. A real man should know his way around a kitchen and be able to cook a good meal now and again. When in the company of others, ramen and poptarts do not count.

How to pass a Call Center Screening / Interview and Exam

Last month I got hired by one of the pioneer call centers here in Cebu. That very day I signed my contract is the very official day that I marked on my Calendar as the day when I become a certified callboy just like my cousin, Mon.

The joy that I felt when I got hired is almost the same with the joy that I felt during graduation day. And I wanna share the things that I’ve learned regarding how to pass a call center job interview or the whole screening process.

But before that, commercial muna:

Check out Monz Avenue:

Basically, Call Center knowledge requirements will vary depending on the company, product and scope of the job. However typical knowledge requirements for a call center position include:

  • Typing/keyboard (usually over 30 wpm)
  • basic computer and technological knowledge
  • knowledge of relevant software applications
  • numeric, oral and written language applications
  • customer relationship principles and practices

Phase 1: Initial Interview:

Common Questions:

“Tell Me about Yourself”

-         At this point, the interviewer is already holding your resume, thus, there’s no need to say exactly everything that’s written in your resume. You can give answers that would tell more about your character as a person like…

“Basically, I’m the kind of person who enjoys working with different kinds of people. I think the thought of working with different kinds of people of different characters and how one would adapt with each other is challenging and I like (love) challenges.”

Wrong Answer: Beginning the answer with “I am (insert name here) and I live in (insert address here). Meaning, stop telling what’s obviously written in your resume.

The interviewer will focus on questions that look for evidence of call center-related competencies or questions that would measure your capability to work with different kinds of individual or your customer service skills. You will be asked to give specific examples of when you have shown the required competency in your previous jobs.

Other possible questions would be:

  • How do you usually spend your weekends?
  • Do you like reading books? If yes, what kinds of books do you like?
  • If you mention an author, they might add, “What makes you like this certain author?”
  • What are your computer skills and what software applications have you used? Note: If you are not very techie, don’t be shy to admit it. Just assure them that you are very willing to be trained and that you are a fast-learner. Or you can proudly say that you are very proficient with Microsoft Word.

Phase Two. Examination:

English Exam: Subject verb agreement

For example:

1. Lisa (like/likes) Chad.

Computer terminologies:

  1. USB : Universal serial Bus
  2. Wi-fi : Wireless Fidelity
  3. HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol
  4. RAM: Random Access Memory
  5. ROM: Read-only Memory
  6. WWW: World wide Web
  7. LAN: Local Area Network
  8. MAN: Metropolitan Area Network
  9. WAN: Wide Area Network

10.  CPU: Central Processing Unit

You will also be asked to read a passage or paragraph and you will be asked certain question regarding what you have read. Or you will be asked to tell what’s the main point of the paragraph. Or you will be asked to summarize the paragraph in two or three sentences.

You will also be asked to listen to a call conversation and there will be follow-up questions like:

  1. What was the main purpose of the call?
  2. If you were the agent how would you handle the caller?
  3. You will be asked to assess the agent whether or not he was effective or not.

Final Interview or Interview with HR.

Reflect on your past experiences, select appropriate examples and plan your response using the following structure:

Note: If you don’t have any previous work experience yet, you might be asked about your roles or responsibilities, achievements or accomplishments when you were still at school.

  • Describe the specific situation or task you were involved in
  • Detail the action and steps you took in the situation
  • Outline the results and outcome of your actions. What happened, what was accomplished, what did you learn?

Prepare to answers questions like:

What are your principles in life?

Do you always depend to your parents when making big decisions in life? Or how do your parents affect you when it comes to decision-making for yourself?

You may also receive questions that would measure your Customer service skills:

Key to success in a call center position is your customer service skills and orientation.

“Describe a situation when you had to deal with demands from an unreasonable customer.”

“Tell me about a time when you went the extra mile for a customer.”

“Describe a situation when you had to calm down a very angry customer.”

Tip : Show how you proactively develop the relationship with the customer, make the extra effort to listen and understand the customer and give high priority to meting the customer’s needs. Describe your ability to handle negative customers without being intimidated or getting upset.

Learning Skills

Call center positions often require the successful candidate to undergo both product and technical training. In the call center interview you will be asked questions that explore your ability to learn and apply new information quickly and willingly.

“Tell me about a time you were able to learn something complex in a short time period.”

“Describe the last time that you volunteered to gain new knowledge at work or in your own time, without being asked to.”

“How have you gone about getting answers to questions you have about your work?”

Tip : Detail how you are able to learn and apply new job-related information in a timely manner. Describe your activities towards self-development and ongoing learning.

Stress tolerance

A call center is usually a very pressurized environment to work in, your ability to deal with stress is core to your success.

“Describe a situation when a customer really upset you but you had to remain composed.”

“Tell me about a stressful interaction you had with a team member, how did you handle it?”

Tip : Describe your ability to maintain work performance under pressure or provocation. Detail how you reduce your stress levels and what coping techniques you have developed. It would help if you mention your hobbies or favorite past times that help you cope up with stress.

NOTE:

Your competency in communicating effectively and your listening skills will be assessed as you interact with the interviewer. Make sure you speak clearly and concisely, choosing your words with care and using correct grammar. Listen carefully to questions during the call center interview and ask for further clarification if you do not properly understand a question.

During the call center interview expect questions that explore your motivation to work in the call center and your commitment to staying in the position, such as:

“What do you enjoy about working in a call center?”

“Why have you chosen a career in this industry?”

“What does a call center mean to you?”

This seemingly harmless question is a way for your prospective employer to gauge how serious you are, and what your commitment to the job will be.

Note: A simple and precise answer will do. You may say, “A call center is a company that handles customer care or customer service via telephone.”

They might add, “What do you know about the BPO Industry?”

You may say,

“BPO or Business Process Outsourcing is common among big companies nowadays. Basically it’s about linking of two companies in which the other company serves as the provider and the other one is the client. One example is a call center company that provides customer service to the customers of their client.”

For example, Sayks is a call center that handles customer care for Kodyak company. In other words, when the customers dial the Kodyak Customer care phone number, the Sayks employees are the ones handling the calls.

Teamwork

- “What do you consider to be the importance of teamwork?”

Employers tend to prefer people who like to work in a team. Loners have a lower chance of being hired. Be sure to let your interviewers know that you can work in a team without becoming stressed or hostile. Management books about the value of teamwork can help you find the words you need to express the value of teamwork in the workplace.

Why I Fired My Sexetary

Last week was my birthday
and I didn’t feel very well
waking up on that morning.

I went downstairs for breakfast
hoping my wife would be pleasant and say,
‘Happy Birthday!’,
and possibly have a small present for me.

As it turned out,
she barely said good morning,
let alone
‘ Happy Birthday.’

I thought…

Well, that’s marriage for you,
but the kids…
They will remember.

My kids came bounding down stairs to breakfast
and didn’t say a word.
So when I left for the office,
I felt pretty low
and somewhat despondent.

As I walked into my office,
my secretary Jane said,
‘Good Morning Boss,
and by the way
Happy Birthday ! ‘
It felt a little better
that at least someone had remembered.

I worked until one o’clock ,
when Jane knocked on my door
and said, ‘You know,
It’s such a beautiful day outside,
and it is your Birthday,
what do you say we go out to lunch,
just you and me.’
I said, ‘Thanks, Jane,
that’s the greatest thing
I’ve heard all day.
Let’s go !’

We went to lunch.
But we didn’t go
where we normally would go.
She chose instead at a quiet bistro
with a private table.
We had two martinis each
and I enjoyed the meal tremendously.

On the way back to the office,
Jane said, ‘You know,
It’s such a beautiful day…
We don’t need to go straight back to the office,
Do We ?’

I responded,
‘I guess not.
What do you have in mind ?’
She said,
‘Let’s drop by my apartment,
it’s just around the corner.’

After arriving at her apartment,
Jane turned to me and said,
‘ Boss, if you don’t mind,
I’m going to step into the bedroom
for just a moment.
I’ll be right back.’
‘Ok.’ I nervously replied.

She went into the bedroom and,
after a couple of minutes,
she came out
carrying a huge birthday cake …
Followed
by my wife,
my kids,
and dozens of my friends
and co-workers,
all singing ‘Happy Birthday’.

And I just sat there…

On the couch…

Hello world!

So this is my first time to put up a blog. I was never interested in writing as I never aspired to become a writer. I don’t have the talent and I don’t have the discipline. But here I am putting up a blog simply because I’ve heard this is the latest “in” thing. LOL

So basically, this blog will serve as my online journal. I’ll try to maintain this blog and keep this up-to-date as soon as my internet connection at home gets back.

Feel free to link with me. Get to know me cuz I assure you, there’s more to me than meets the eye! ;)
